Custom Orthodontic Retainers
Your orthodontic treatment is an investment in your smile, and retainers help protect that investment. Wearing your retainers as instructed ensures your teeth stay beautifully aligned for years to come. To maintain your results, it’s crucial to follow post-treatment care guidelines, which we’ve outlined below.
Why Retainers Matter
Once your braces or Invisalign clear aligners are removed, your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions. Retainers help keep them in place while the surrounding bone and soft tissues adapt. For the best results, it’s essential to wear your retainers as directed—neglecting them can lead to unwanted tooth movement and potentially require re-treatment.
Types of Orthodontic Retainers
Removable Retainers
Because teeth naturally shift over time, we recommend that individuals who have undergone orthodontic treatment wear retainers indefinitely.
- First 2–3 months: Wear your retainers 24/7, except when eating or cleaning them.
- After 2-3 months: You can switch to wearing them only at night. During this time, Dr. Maryam Mojdehi-Barnes will monitor your progress and provide recommendations regarding wisdom teeth and retainer fit.
- Long-term maintenance: Once your wisdom teeth have been evaluated and a treatment plan is in place, you should continue wearing your retainers at least 3–4 nights per week unless instructed otherwise. Over time, natural aging can cause teeth to shift, so consistent retainer use is essential for maintaining your smile.
Hawley Retainer
A traditional retainer made of durable acrylic and stainless steel wires.
Clear Retainer
A discreet, clear plastic retainer that resembles Invisalign aligners.
Caring for Your Retainers
- Clean daily: Gently brush with a toothbrush and mild soap; denture cleaning tablets like Efferdent help remove buildup.
- Avoid heat: Keep retainers away from hot surfaces (dishwashers, dashboards, heaters) to prevent warping.
- Store properly: Always keep your retainers in their protective case when not in use.
- Keep away from pets: Dogs love to chew retainers—store them safely!
- Replace when necessary: Retainers wear out over time. Your treatment includes two sets, but lost or damaged retainers may require replacement at an additional cost.
