Surgical Orthodontics to Transform Your Smile

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialized treatment that corrects jaw alignment and bite disorders. This procedure, performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, not only enhances facial appearance but also improves speaking, chewing, and breathing.

It is ideal for adult patients and adolescents with severe bite issues and skeletal discrepancies who have reached full physical maturity. In adolescents, orthognathic surgery may need to be delayed until growth is completed. Non-growing adults are prime candidates for this treatment, as jaw growth has already ceased.

Who Can Benefit from Surgical Orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics best suits individuals with severe bite problems or facial aesthetic concerns. This treatment is designed for those who have completed jaw growth—typically by age 17 for females and 20 for males—but can be performed earlier in cases requiring pre-surgical orthodontic treatment. In some cases, braces alone might worsen the bite, necessitating the use of orthognathic surgery to align the jaw and teeth properly.

How Surgical Orthodontics Works

Orthognathic surgery involves moving the jaws into the correct position so that the teeth can fit together properly. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon performs this surgery and plans it alongside the orthodontist. Depending on the patient’s needs, the surgery can take several hours.

  • Lower Jaw Surgery: The jawbone is separated behind the teeth, and the tooth-bearing portion is adjusted forward or backward as necessary.
  • Upper Jaw Surgery: The upper jaw may be raised, lowered, or repositioned. In certain cases, bones may be added or removed for enhanced stability and alignment.
  • Facial Bone Adjustments: Additional facial bones may also be repositioned to ensure optimal alignment and cosmetic results.

Recovery After The Process

Recovery begins with an initial period of about two to four weeks, after which most patients can return to normal activities. Complete healing typically takes between four to eight weeks. Post-surgery, orthodontic adjustments are common, with braces typically being removed 6 to 12 months after surgery. To maintain the corrected tooth alignment, a retainer will be needed after the braces are removed.
